Zooey stands in the empty locker room, staring at her reflection in the mirror. Her expression is focused, neutral, as she meets her own eyes in the mirror. She keeps her hands at her sides, wrapped and taped for boxing and wearing her usual all black workout gear, she stares herself down for a moment longer before she starts to talk.
“I have had my ups and downs in this company, I have made no secret of my swift decline towards the end of last year. Before facing Gavin Grimes,I questioned my place in this sport, I was unsure where I belong, where I fit in… One foot out of the Muay Thai world and one foot in the Wrestling world, I felt as though I were straddling my future with no place to turn.
And then, I lost to Gavin. Arguably the biggest match of my career and… As I have done in the past when a match has really mattered… I walked away the loser.
You could call me a choke artist; that I can build myself up but when it really matters I come tumbling down. I did against Gavin… I did against Hutch… The only two times a win in my career would be a true turning point and I failed. I couldn’t become a Champion and I couldn’t defeat a self-proclaimed legend.. So what does that mean for me?
Does it make me a failure? A loser? Maybe in the eyes of some… But I have come to find there is as much to learn from a loss as there is from a victory. I know I still have a lot to learn, I know I have growth to make before I can expect to find myself in the position I once was… And a truly great mind, knows when it’s time to call for re-enforcements.”
She smirks and turns away from the mirror to face the camera full on now.
“Sometimes, a change of plan, a new path is the perfect way to shake things up and find your footing; Jenson and me? That is exactly what we are gonna do. Now I don’t doubt the same smart arses will claim I couldn’t handle things by myself so I called my friend to hold my hand - to them I say…
Have you seen the tag division lately?
I would hardly call this easy street and whilst I look forward to teaming with Jen in the ring. I am under no delusions that this will be a cakewalk, I know to get noticed, to get recognized in this division we are going to have to fight tooth and fucking nail - and that is EXACTLY what we are both prepared to do.”
She starts to walk up and down, as she paces, she taps her hands against her thighs as though keeping a beat.
“I understand what has become my limitation, that I can win matches, knock out opponents, send packing the faceless, nameless masses who come knocking at our door, but when it comes to what matters… I haven’t quite been able to get the job done. I will not give up, I will not surrender… I will not run away from the challenges presented to me.
With Jenson by my side, this will be a new dawning in the tag division, this will be a new era for my Wrestling career, one in which I will not refute my own arrogance or ego, but I also will not make outlandish claims for the sheer audacity to tweet them to the general public, whilst others may be concerned with who kicks harder, I care only about my self progression and learning in this sport.
I want to be one of the remembered, one of the greats, but that comes from understanding that we all start somewhere, I was not ready, in the past, to accept this as a truth, but now I know, now I understand what must be done. I must set aside my pride, forget the records and the Championships won inside a Muay Thai ring.
I will enter that ring for the first time as Zooey Anderson, one half of the one day Tag Champions, I will enter with my head held high and leave… With my arms raised.”
Zooey stands in the middle of the back office at Anderson Fighting Systems, the gym itself has been completely revamped, with most of the equipment packed away into side rooms, the main floor of the gym completely decked out in white tea roses and lines of chairs either side of an aisle, sprinkled with matching petals. A white wicker look archway stands at the head of the aisle and silks hanging around the room almost give it a marquee feel.
The back office has also been moved around, Josh's desk pushed up against one wall has become a makeup and hair station, with the artists tools laid out like a production line and two chairs set up beside it. A long, floor-length mirror has been set up in the room and standing in front of it is Zooey.
Dressed in a very fitted white lace gown that hugs her body down to her knees and then fans out with layer upon layer of white lace, the train carried back almost a foot, buttons from the low v in the back of the dress all the way to the very base of her back add just the right amount of detailing. Her blonde hair is curled and set up with little silver pins and clipped under her hair is a long white veil, dotted with crystals that shimmer in the light.
As the door opens she looks over her shoulder to see Jenson, she half smiles in a nervous way and lets out a deep breath, shaking out her hands with a laugh.
"I didn't think I'd be this nervous.... Fucking hell, I'm shaking." Jenson laughs as he makes his way towards Zooey. "Nervous? For what, luv? That's quite unlike you." He gives her a quick hug and smiles. "Calm your nerves." She rolls her eyes at him with a laugh."You do know I'm about to get fucking married yeah?" She smirks as she looks him up and down, playfully pulling at the lapel on his suit.
"You clean up alright... Maxx dress you did she?" The smirk stays on her lips as she looks back to the mirror and starts fiddling with the lace on her dress."I look like a fucking Doilley!" He bursts into laughter at her last comment while shaking her head. "Shut up Zoo, you look bloody beautiful." He smiles. "And getting married or not, I didn't expect you to be this nervous. Shaking and what not?"
He laughs before placing his hands on her shoulders. "The moment you walk out there and see Josh, those nerves are going to be gone, luv." He runs his hands over his suit. "As for Maxx dressing me, you know I've always cleaned up well. So don't even start that!" She laughs and looks back at him."Your shoes match your belt, ain't no way you did that on your own." She winks at him, taking a deep breath she looks back in the mirror again and runs her veil through her fingers with a pensive frown."It ain't the marrying part I'm so worried about, it's what comes after.. Like, what if everything changes yeah? And I don't want things to change, I quite like the life I've got." She looks up into the mirror and smiles at his reflection.
"I'm really glad you're here today Jenny..." She smirks a little as she calls him that. "Especially since Kyle is so up his own fucking arse since dad died he refused to even come... You and Sixx are the closest thing I've got to family these days, all the rejects standing together aye?" He laughs and nods. "Aye, I guess so. But to be fair, you're the only genuine friend I've got so I guess I was stuck coming here even if I didn't want to." He smirks and gives her a playful wink. She laughs and turns to full face him now, gently patting down the lapels on his suit she sighs. "I'm proud of you lad, you know that?" She tilts her head slightly and smiles widely, a few tears forming in her eyes threatening to ruin her make up. "I know it ain't been easy for you and some of them haven't exactly been welcoming, but you've done everything you can to show that you want to be better than you were." She taps his shoulder with another smile. "There's no one I'd rather have standing beside me, not today and not in that ring, yeah?"
His eyes get a bit glassy now as he slowly nods. He wipes his eyes and laughs. "I better be careful not to smear me make up." He grins. "But honestly, thanks Zoo. I wouldn't be where I am without you. You're the only one who believed in me when nobody else did. The only person I had when everyone else abandoned me. You're the best damn friend I've ever had and I'm proud to be here. Josh is a lucky man but you're quite lucky yourself! You've both done so much for me. Him being my mentor, you being my best friend."
She smiles and looks down to wave her hand in front of her face to stop the tears from falling, when she looks back up at him she sighs. "He's proud of you too, he's just fucking stubborn, you know?" She laughs slightly and hugs him, leaning back she shakes her head. "When did we turn into sappy fucks?" She punches his arm as though to illustrate her voice. "Now get all your cussing out in this room cause if Sixx hears you call someone a bloody twat you might make her go into labor in the middle of me reception!"
She laughs a more genuine and less nervous laugh this time as she turns back to the mirror with a shake of her head. "I can't believe I'm standing here right now... A year ago I was still fighting to get out of basement contracts in do Nothing towns and now I'm about to get married, on the cusp of breaking out into the tag team division and looking to build an empire with the man who after today I'll call my husband." She shakes her head again and lets out another deep breath. "Do you reckon he's nervous at all?"
"The great Josh Anderson? Nervous!?" Jenson laughs and nods. "He's probably more nervous than he's ever been in his life. But he's got a pretty good poker face, aye? He ain't gonna show that shit to nobody." She smiles and nods, running her hand down her dress. "Probably lecturing Tyson to take notes on how he should behave!" She can't help but laugh and she turns around to face him again, looking up into his eyes. "I'm wearing some very stupid, uncomfortable and impossible to walk in shoes... if you let me fall, I'm gonna kick your head clean off your shoulders, get me?"
He places a hand on her shoulder and a cocky smirk runs across his face. "I haven't failed you yet, aye? I won't fail you now, luv. You caught me when I fell... I'll do the same for you." She smiles and places her hand on his with a nod. "Okay... I'm ready." He smiles warmly. "Of course you are. And look at that, no more shaking. You really are ready to get married, aren't ya?" She links her arm through his and takes one last deep breath. "Okay Jen, take a good long look because this is the last time you're going to see me as Zooey West-Jaa."
She laughs with a glance up at him before they head towards the door.
LATER THAT DAY
Zooey stands out on the court way at the back of Andersons Fighting Systems. Her figure hugging white lace dress almost illuminated in the moonlight, the layers and layers of lace that ruffle out from her legs into a mermaid like train move just a little in the breeze. Her blonde hair now down around her shoulders in loose curls and her veil already taken off. She leans against the railing looking out at the street below with a small smile on her face, the gym behind her abuzz with music and laughter as the reception is in full swing. Josh quietly makes his way behind her and wraps his arms around her from behind.
“Hello Mrs. Anderson… Have you seen your devastatingly handsome husband lately?” She turns in his embrace and smiles, looking up at him. “I have and he looks rather exceptional in the suit his rather enamoured wife picked out for him…” she kisses him softly, her hand resting on his shoulder as she leans into him with a content sound. “We did it, I actually can't believe we did it.” He chuckles. “I should say that I did it…” he smirks. “I got this sexy, fit, hot wife now. Sorry I'm not better looking for you.” He says in a joking manner.
She clucks her tongue and pats the breast of his suit with a shake of her head “Lucky for you, as well as being incredibly attractive, your wife has a keen eye for detail and will keep you looking your best for years to come.” She laughs softly and kisses him again. “I have to say, I'm pretty impressed that everyone has behaved.. I gave Jenson fair warning about dropping F-Bombs around Sixx… Preemptive damage control.” She smirks slightly as she looks up into his face.
He chuckles a bit. “How'd I get so damn lucky baby?” He leans in and kisses her. “Thank you for making me the happiest man in the entire world…. Seriously, you're better than any championships or anything the line could be. I love you.” A light blush touches her cheeks “I love you too… Today has been the best day of my life, I'm just sorry that my father wasn't around to see it.” A little sadness crosses her face. Josh sighs and holds her tight. “I'm sorry both of our dads couldn't be here in person. But in spirit? They were front row hanging onto our moms smiling big.”
She tears up a little with a small nod “I think my mum had an entire box of Kleenex stuffed in her purse…” she leans up closer to his face with a grin “Grabbing a handful of Tyson’s arse on the dance floor seems to have cheered her right up though aye?” As she laughs her voice breaks a little, obviously feeling very emotional despite her jovial demeanor. He laughs. “To be fair, that would brighten up just about anyone.” He wipes at her tears. “So, Mrs. Anderson… How does the new name feel?” She takes a moment, a small smile playing on her lips “ I'm still getting used to hearing it, but nothing has made me as happy as hearing that name on your lips.” She tilts her head slightly as her smile turns to a frown…
“Do you think Kyle is ever going to forgive me? Not having him here makes it feel like something is missing and, as amazing as Jenson was today… it should have been Kyle.” She wraps her hand around his arm and squeezes it; “We spent our whole lives living in each other's pockets and now…” she sighs. “How could he miss his own twins wedding day?” Josh shakes his head. “Cause he's egotistical and selfish. You got the talent in the ring and he got the ego that matches it.” He squeezes her hand and looks at her wedding band. “I can talk to him if you'd like? See what's his deal? You married me so now you have my services.” He playfully sticks his tongue out at her.
She laughs and shakes her head “No… Let him sulk.” She groans slightly “Sorry to be such a downer, nothing could spoil today. I love you and I am honoured to be your wife.” Josh spins her around as he dress flutters and flows. “Did I mention how beautiful you looked today? Seriously, you have to be the most beautiful bride in the history of weddings.” He kisses her softly. “Do you wanna dance with your new husband?” She grins up at him with a nod “I can't think of a single thing I want to do more.”
